Pastoral Care

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me to preach good news to the poor.  He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”
Luke 4: 18-19

Vision for Pastoral Care at St Mary’s

We believe that God loves us unconditionally and cares for us in a real and active way. Because of this we are called to unconditionally love and care for those around us. At St Mary’s, we have a vision of growing teams equipped to meet all kinds of physical, emotional and spiritual pastoral needs in our local church community.

Pastoral Prayer Ministry

We believe God listens to our prayers and is able to answer them through the Holy Spirit by intervening and bringing healing through Christ’s redemptive work on the cross.

The Pastoral Prayer Team at St Mary’s Longfleet provides a place for people to come and share in confidence and without judgment to enable them to receive God’s wholeness and deep healing into their lives.

The team will spend time seeking the Lord with people and through the Holy Spirit to bringing them into the freedom of abundant life that the Lord has for them, and in turn releasing them into fullness of life that will enable them to in turn bring life to others.

This confidential ministry is offered to those who regularly worship at St Mary’s and are seeking to receive God’s wholeness and deeper healing in their lives without the time restraints of the end of service Prayer Ministry. This would usually involve an agreed number of weekly or fortnightly sessions. Trained and appointed people are available for this ministry, most of whom will have experienced a degree of healing with this method of prayer themselves.

Pastoral Care Support

Pastoral Care support teams offer practical help when and where needed in and around St Mary’s. It is staffed by volunteer helpers, who give of their time and talents freely, according to the needs which are identified in the parish.

For example:

  • Visiting the housebound for a chat;
  • Visiting the sick at home or hospital;
  • Visiting the elderly in nursing homes;
  • Practical jobs around the home;
  • Baby sitting in emergencies or for SML events;
  • Cooking the occasional meal in emergencies;
  • Helping families with new babies;
  • Helping with shopping;
  • Lifts to and from church.

Bereavement Support

Losing a loved one can be a traumatic life event that leaves a person devastated. Family and friend are a source of great comfort but sometimes they can live a distance away and find it hard to be there. As part God’s family, volunteers from St Mary’s offer pastoral visiting and support for those in our fellowship who have been bereaved.

Marriage Mentoring

We have a number of married couples, who passionately believe in God’s marriage covenant, trained to help couples in marriage preparation, enrichment and support. Marriage is challenging for most couples, often filled with joy and some difficult times. Just as our spiritual relationship with Christ needs nurturing and feeding our marital relationship becomes a treasure when we tend and water it.

We offer the ‘Prepare Enrich’ programme*, which has helped countless couples across the world achieve a greater fulfilment in their relationship and is great for married couples of any age.

Most couples enjoy preparing for a wedding ceremony but spend little time learning the skills needed to build a marriage that God wants to last a lifetime. St Mary’s offers a marriage preparation course and coupled with this programme aims to quickly develop the basic skills to achieve a head start.

This ministry is offered in complete confidence.

St Mary’s do not offer marriage counselling but can advise of Christian marriage counselling organisations.
